Alabama Might Be in Big Trouble
The Alabama Athletic Department released documents today admitting that they may have committed “major violations”, in the case of athletes there receiving handouts from the university. I bet it was like cars and T.V.’s…
The letter outlined charges that student-athletes were “permitted to use athletics book aid to obtain books and supplies for courses in which they were not enrolled,” and that student-athletes also received recommended and optional material for courses they were enrolled in..
Free textbooks and supplies? What the hell kind of Athletes want textbooks and supplies for classes they’re not in? I mean except for Myron Rolle. Ooooh, I get it. They just resold those books, and by “supplies” they mean iPods and whores.
Alabama’s response to the NCAA points out its investigation found that no student-athlete resold books for cash or used scholarship book accounts to purchase “non-academic items” like iPods or sweatshirts.
So Alabama broke the rules by allowing their athletes to get free textbooks? That’s the major violation? I hardly think telling scholars like Antoine Caldwell and Glen Coffee about this scheme would be much of a recruiting tool.
“Yeah, we know Tennessee has offered you hummers in Hummers, but that’s nothing compared to what we can do for you kid. Here you can get books for classes you’re not even in!! Think of all the sweet ass you’ll be pulling around Tuscaloosa with those extra books. Ooooh Yeeaaah son!”
In defense of the NCAA, there’s no way this went on for three years without anyone in the administration noticing. Football players actually getting textbooks should have been a bit of a red flag at Alabama. Especially for any course not in University Studies or Communication.
