Floyd likely won't be the last coach OJ forces into retirement

Tim Floyd resigned as head coach at Southern Cal yesterday, but not for the reason everyone thinks.  It’s been assumed that he paid an associate of OJ Mayo in order to gain the star player’s services and with the NCAA now investigating those claims, Floyd felt it was time to go.  In actuality, he resigned because suddenly he no longer has a passion for the job.  It’s strange because he was interviewing for another head coaching job just a couple of months ago, but it’s all right there in his resignation letter.

”As of 1 p.m. today, I am resigning as head basketball coach at the University of Southern California. I deeply appreciate the opportunity afforded me by the university, as well as the chance to know and work with some of the finest young men in college athletics.

”Unfortunately, I no longer feel I can offer the level of enthusiasm to my duties that is deserved by the university, my coaching staff, my players, their families, and the supporters of Southern Cal. I always promised my self and my family that if I ever felt I could no longer give my full enthusiasm to a job, that I should leave it to others who could. I intend to contact my coaching staff and my players in coming days and weeks to tell them how much each of them means to me. I wish the best to USC and to my successor.

See?  He lost his enthusiasm.  I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t just read it.  You don’t think he would lie, do you?  Sure he paid for Mayo, but he’s never commented on it publicly so he’s never lied about it.  He did tell Arizona’s AD while interviewing for their head coaching position that there was “nothing to that” when asked about the reports concerning OJ Mayo.  But he might have just meant that it’s really straight forward and simple, there’s nothing to it, I paid him and it was really easy.

USC could suffer a severe backlash from the NCAA if any hard evidence is uncovered.  They could be forced to forfeit their wins from games in which Mayo played and could also lose scholarships and be restricted in recruiting.  The real concern should go to Floyd, however.  He has said on more than one occasion that the USC job is his last job.  Well, he’s 55-years-old and I guess now he’s retired in a bad economy.  He could probably use some of that money he’s allegedly handed out over the years.  Let’s say, $1-thousand in a blank envelope.

Even with this scandal surrounding the recruiting of OJ Mayo, at least we can say that Tim Floyd is honest.  He said the USC job would be his last and by paying players and apparently losing his enthusiasm for the job, he’s ensured that it will be.
