Tim Sylvia pisses off Ray Mercer; Takes Nap

Sunday, June 14th, 2009 | Robbie

Ray Mercer and Tim Sylvia had a “fight” last night in Alabama.  Originally they agreed to a boxing match, but couldn’t get the rights to do that, so they called it an MMA fight instead.  They presumably were still going to fight by the rules of traditional boxing, but Tim Sylvia seems to be forgetful.  I don’t think what Ray Mercer did to his brain as a consequence will help this.

Not only did Sylvia show up 45 pounds over-weight, he started the fight with a kick that clearly pissed off Mercer.  It should also be noted that Mercer is 48 years old, and Tim Sylvia is only 33.  I’ve long been a believer in old man strength, and I’d like to think that when Tim Sylvia remembers how to form coherent thoughts that he’d agree with me.

Before the match, Sylvia’s MFS-mate Jens Pulver expressed some concern about the decision making in even scheduling this fight, and also in Sylvia’s preparation.

“I don’t care how old Ray Mercer is, you don’t win a world title unless you can thump.  He’s not to be messed with.  We’ll have to see what Tim can do with that.”…”I think they’re taking this as sparring, and they’re going to find Mercer probably isn’t taking this as a sparring bout.”

That sounds like pretty sound advice.  Either Pulver never thought to mention that to Tim Sylvia, or Sylvia is an idiot and got what he deserved.

so now UFC has a WWE wrestler as their heavyweight champion and their 2 time champion was just knocked out in 9 seconds by an almost 50 year old ex boxer.
Mercer was also an army sergeant too wasn’t he?
did he fight for the north or south? Lol!
