Marquis Daniels Needs A Mouthpiece… I Guess

I think Mozart had the same suit

Auburn product Marquis Daniels emerged as a fan favorite in Dallas after signing as an undrafted free agent with the Mavericks in 2003.  The shine wore off in subsequent seasons and he was dealt to Indiana for Ausin Croshere, a move that essentially equated to two monkeys throwing feces at each other.  Indiana reportedly has now decided to cut Daniels after 3 sub-par seasons, but he doesn’t seem to be worried.  Daniels is now in the company of Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.  Not because of his basketball ability… you didn’t really think that did you?  Daniels, or Q6 as he is now known, has dropped a rap single.  I’ll give you one chance to guess how good it is.

Q6’s track “Mouthpiece” features Lil Boosie, which obviously lends immediate credibility to the project.  Not that I’ve ever heard of Lil Boosie, but it’s a name that inspires confidence and suggests quiet dignity and excellence.  I heard Obama considered running under the name Lil Boosie but he was worried about, oh, uh, what do you call it, assassination.

The oppressive attack on the ears of the innocent song tells the story of a young man growing up in poverty and inspires others like him to never give up and achieve their dreams.  Nah, I’m just kidding, it’s 4 and a half minutes of nonsense and poor rhyme scheme.

If I had to make sense of it, I’d say that Marquis is asking for a mouthpiece for a guy he knows because he is “grittin’ teeth”.  No doubt the man is experiencing some trepidation about the world’s economy and it’s causing some nervous grinding of his teeth.  This line is repeated several times to underscore it’s importance.  As is the line “I be rollin’ rollin”, which I think speaks for itself.

Another 20 seconds is taken up while Q6 asks for a water bottle.  I actually don’t think that was supposed to be part of the song, but rather an abandoned take where Daniels really needed some water.  I assume it was left in by mistake.

Then there’s the question of whether or not six rhymes with bitch or shit.  It doesn’t seem possible that that trio of words could rhyme with one another, but such is the genius of Q6.

For me, and I’m sure music critics everywhere, Daniels showcases his true brilliance with the line ‘damn lil’ mama so fine, I’m growin’ a horn… I don’t want to eat shit…YEAH’.  Now there’s a quote that will stand the test of time.

It seems unfair to break down this work of art any further so I’ll leave you with one final thought.  The Kennedy Assassination, 9/11, Pearl Harbor and Q6’s ‘Mouthpiece’, these are all moments that you tell your children, ‘I remember where I was when I heard about it.’  Also, they are all horrific American tragedies.
