Brady Quinn Cheated On Derek Anderson

How far are you two from being competent QBs?
The Cleveland Browns have had a quarterback controversy brewing since the end of the 2007 season. Derek Anderson had just put together a Pro Bowl caliber year, but former Notre Dame star Brady Quinn was waiting in the wings. The Browns had the option to trade one of them at the peak of their value, but decided instead to wait for one signal-caller to claim the starting job. Two years later, that proved to be the wrong decision. Investing in these two quarterbacks has been the same as investing in a sandwich. After two years, you’re left with a rancid, stinking mess that’s lost all appeal and value.
Anderson and Quinn are battling for QB1 for the second consecutive off-season. Last year, Anderson was the initial starter but was eventually replaced by Quinn who was replaced by Ken Dorsey, I think. ‘Starter Ken Dorsey’ is now NFL-slang for our QBs are f’ing terrible’.
This season is at least slightly different than last in that Quinn has seemingly picked up some tricks for stealing the job. According to ESPN’s John Clayton, Derek Anderson’s helmet radio was out during a recent practice, so he was forced to call plays with hand signals. Quinn was nice enough to enlighten the defense about the meaning behind the hand-signals. The result was the Browns’ defense looking more like the Steelers defense. Or, you know, any other defense Anderson played against in ‘08.
These actions bring up a couple of questions. Mainly for me, why do you need to help Derek Anderson look bad against a live defense? In 2008, he only completed 50-percent of his passes and threw 8 picks in 9 starts. I’d say Quinn’s cheating ways say more about his shortcomings as a QB than it does prove Anderson is unfit for the job. That’s the first time I’ve used the words ’shortcomings’ and ‘cheating ways’ in the same sentence when talking about two dudes. Just thought I’d let you know.
On the other hand, why is Brady Quinn so keen on becoming the starting Browns QB? The team isn’t very good, so even if Quinn proves himself to be a solid player, he’s not going to have much success. He’s much better off with the cushy back-up job, being the fan favorite and collecting his checks until he becomes a free agent and can find a better situation. Trying to be the Browns starter right now is like trying to be the male lead in a Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton vehicle. Even De Niro in his prime couldn’t salvage that train wreck from going straight to DVD.
