Jozy Altidore: Tardy Taboo Twitterer

Jozy needs new friends
U.S. striker Jozy Alitdore plays his club soccer in England for the Premiership’s Hull City, while he’s on loan from Spain’s Villarreal. I use the term ‘plays’ loosely here because Jozy was not even allowed to sit on the bench on Saturday after he arrived late to the scheduled match against Portsmouth.
”It’s unacceptable behavior, full stop,” Hull manager Phil Brown said. ”You prepare all week for a match day, mentally and physically. To ask a player to arrive an hour and a half before a game is not too much to ask, is it?”
I assume he’s asking me, so I’ll say it apparently is too much to ask because Jozy couldn’t make it on time. Altidore is a wealthy 19-year-old in a foreign country where it’s legal for him to drink alcohol. I’m sure that he not only has a good excuse for being late, but he has a pretty damn good story to go along with it.
Unfortunately, Jozy made even more monocle fall into even more champagne glasses when he used Twitter to apologize to the fans for his absence.
Apologize to all of you. I showed up late. Made a big mistake. I’m very, very sorry.
I’m not really sure if a fine was levied against the American because he revealed to everyone why he wasn’t included on the team’s active roster or because he used proper spelling and very nearly proper grammar on Twitter, which is understandably frowned upon as much in the UK as it is in the States.
The press is England is basically guerilla paparazzi, so I’m not sure how anyone would expect that the details to Altidore’s absence wouldn’t get out if anyone cared to know. Still, shame on Jozy for being considerate to the people who pay money to watch you play, essentially enabling you to parlay your talent into a viable career. Those ignorant peasants don’t need to know why they bought tickets and didn’t see you even in the stadium. And your apology makes you appear weak. You have much to learn about becoming nobility, you grubby little American.
